Baja Rosario

Baja Rosario is one of the last dives within the Mar de las Calmas marine reserve, less than 20 minutes sailing west from the port of La Restinga, and also in the vicinity of the natural pools of Tacorón, enjoying an unbeatable location.

Characteristics

Baja Rosario is characterized by its impressive volcanic “Hoya”, where until 2019, pregnant females of the “Solrayo” Shark, a type of Sand Tiger Shark, could be observed approaching the shallows to seek tranquility during their gestation days. This depression, with a maximum depth of 12 meters, is a visual spectacle due to its illumination and topography. Another characteristic of Baja Rosario is its main mountain, with a long, flat peak just 6 meters deep, where a lot of marine life congregates due to its proximity to the surface and illumination. This mountain lies over the canyons formed by the action of lava running down its slopes, falling deeper into the seabed and disappearing into a sandy bottom at over 30 meters deep. We will finish by visiting the top of this mountain in its shallowest, under the boat, where its cracks and crevices give shelter to a great range of the Macaronesian fish diversity.

Marine Life

The fauna of Baja Rosario is very varied and abundant due to its different landscapes. In the volcanic “hoya”, different types of moray eels, seabreams, jacks, ornate wrasses, scorpionfish, damsels, palometas, and some groupers can be observed. Its walls are covered with polyps and anemones, where different types of shrimp, prawns, crabs, and even lobsters can be found at different seasons The surroundings of the main mountain are a magnificent place to spot triggerfish or different types of wrasse, large island groupers, filefishes, amberjacks, barracudas, and occasionally even various types of rays cruising by the divers or simply resting on the sandy bottom. This sandy bottom is the habitat of a small colony of garden eels that will make the dive even more diverse and interesting.

Conditions

The conditions of this site are usually spectacular, due to its location on the outskirts of Tacorón Pools and its privileged surroundings within the Mar de las Calmas marine reserve; it is an easily accessible and pleasant dive spot. Except for a few days a year when, due to its proximity to the coast, it may be affected by south swells, most of the year it is a very popular site for all divers in La Restinga thanks to its perfect location and ease of exploration.

Certification Level

This dive is suitable for all types of certifications, because it offers a great array of possibilities within it. Newbies can enjoy the wonderful scenery of the volcanic shallow walls and the surroundings of the main mountain peaks to 18 or 20 meters. For more advanced divers, we will also enjoy the sand at 30 meters, where you can ́t see the end as the bottom vanishes into the abbysal depths of the Atlantic ocean.
